HOUSTON -- A 6-year-old girl was hit and killed by a suspected drunken driver on Monday night, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Harris County sheriff's deputies said Sheryl Edwards was walking with her two grandchildren on Cossy Road near Huffsmith Kohrville Road in northwest Harris County at about 5:45 p.m.
Deputies said Larry Eugene Womack, 62, left a neighborhood bar driving an SUV a short time earlier. They estimated he was driving 60 mph in a 40 mph zone.
Deputies said Womack lost control of his car and fatally hit Makaylin Angel. Edwards was able to push Kaylee Angel, 4, out of the way.
He was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where deputies said he was determined to be intoxicated.
Deputies said the Kaylee and Edwards will be OK.
Womack has been charged with intoxication manslaughter. He has five convictions on his criminal record dating back to 1978. Three of those convictions involved drinking and driving, officials said.
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is checking to see if Womack was over served at the bar. The bar was cited in 2003 for serving an intoxicated customer.
