HOUSTON -- The Coast Guard has suspended the active search and rescue mission for a Houston pilot of a downed Navy training aircraft, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.
Navy officials said Lt. Bret Travis Miller's body was found on Friday, two days after he and Lt. John Joseph Houston went missing in a T-34 aircraft over the Gulf of Mexico.
The Coast Guard searched for about 131 hours within a 20,900-square-mile area during the search and rescue attempt. Miller's body was found about 11 miles northeast of Port Aransas.
The Coast Guard Cutter Harry Claiborne will continue to use side-scanning sonar in the attempt to find Houston and the downed aircraft, and the U.S. Navy Salvage Dive Team will assist in that mission.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi received a call at 4 p.m. on Wednesday from the Navy Corpus Christi base tower, reporting that the air traffic controller had lost communication with the aircraft.
