Deputy Testifies In Zeigler's Trial

Royce Zeigler II Charged With Capital Murder

UPDATED: 4:52 pm CDT October 29, 2009

A deputy testified Thursday that a man accused of killing his stepdaughter and dumping her body in Galveston Bay showed no emotion over the toddler's death during his interrogation, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Royce Zeigler II is on trial for capital murder, accused of killing 2-year-old Riley Ann Sawyers in October 2007.

The 2-year-old's unidentified body was found in a plastic box. She was nicknamed Baby Grace until Ohio relatives were able to help identify her.

Lt. Tommy Hansen, with the Galveston County Sheriff's Office, testified that Zeigler lied repeatedly during his first interview with police on Nov. 23, 2007.

"He was lying to us about almost everything that was involved here," Hansen said.

After a night in jail, Zeigler admitted dumping the little girl's body into Galveston Bay, but claimed she was killed by her mother, Kimberly Trenor, Hansen testified.

Hansen said Zeigler did not appear to have been traumatized by the girl's death and went to work the next day.

The fisherman who found Riley Ann's body also testified on Thursday. He told the jury how he found a badly decomposed body and a small pink shoe.

As pictures of the box were shown the jury, Zeigler looked down at the table.

"Whether people believe it or not, this is difficult for him. It was a horrible thing to go through then. It's a horrible thing to go through now. I don't expect anybody to feel sorry for Royce Zeigler, I really don't. I just ask that we have a fair process here," defense attorney Dee McWilliams said.

Zeigler's attorney said his client is not guilty of capital murder, but is guilty of concealing evidence to cover up the killing of Riley Ann.

The attorney said Zeigler attempted suicide after Riley Ann's death.

The defense blamed Trenor for the toddler's killing.

Trenor, 21, was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison in February.

Trenor admitted that the girl died after an all-day violent discipline session.

The jury panel consists of nine men, three women and two alternates.

Zeigler's trial is expected to last about two weeks. It is not yet known if Trenor will testify.
