HUMBLE, Texas -- Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Sherronda Adams brought a special guest to the students at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School in Humble -- a robotic deputy named GISMO, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.
In honor of Red Ribbon Week, the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country, Deputy GISMO talked to the kids about how to live a drug free life.
Deputy Adams told the students, "When you decide to follow someone you know, what happens? You tend to go down the wrong path."
GISMO agreed, "That's right!"
GISMO and his brother were purchased thanks to unclaimed drug seizure money.
They are very popular teaching tools for kids of all ages, touching on anything from Stranger Danger to handgun safety.
Deputy Adams told KPRC Local 2, "As long as we have this robot, we can keep the kids attention. As long as I'm standing there, and I can talk all day long, I would bore them. But we bring GISMO out, he comes out and he starts talking and having a good time with the kids and they remember something and we want to drive the message home. So GISMO's purpose is to help drive the message home to kids about safety."
From his message to his cool moves, the kids were completely mesmerized, dancing and laughing along with GISMO.
When asked what he thought about GISMO, third-grader Shiv Patel said, "(He's a) pretty funny robot."
Leah Beene, 9, agreed, "He's pretty cool."
Fifth-grader Justin Cluty said, "He was awesome!"
When 10-year-old Erika Lopez was asked what she learned from GISMO, she answered, "To be drug free."
GISMO is so popular that he makes about 20 appearances a week between schools, health fairs, and senior programs.
