HOUSTON -- Harris County health officials said that a few H1N1 vaccines are available locally, but people have to be persistent to find them, KPRC Local 2 reported Sunday.
On Saturday, an estimated 1,000 cars showed up at a drive-through flu shot clinic in Conroe.
Priority was given to high-risk groups like children and pregnant women, but there weren't nearly enough swine flu vaccines to go around.
"Right now what we're asking is for those people who are healthy, for you to just wait a little while allowing the children to go first, particularly those who have underlying health conditions. They are the people at greatest risk of developing severe disease," said Rita Obey of Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services.
Obey recommended people check with their health care provider often to see if vaccines are available.
President Barack Obama has declared the pandemic a national emergency to allow for quicker government coordination if there's a sudden surge in cases.
State health officials said Texas has received one-third of the vaccines that it ordered.
