HOUSTON -- Sandra Lee-Gray said she is is living a nightmare. Her son, John Michael Lee died of the H1N1 flu last week.
"He had a runny nose, a low grade fever. I am not supposed to burry my son," said Sandra Lee-Gray.
Her Southwest Harris County living room is filled with sympathy cards and photos. The memories she says are all she has now.
"He was my rock. He was so giving to everyone. I just can't wrap my head around what happened," said Lee-Gray.
The flu attacked the 33-year-old fast.
On Oct. 7, he had a cough and runny nose. On Oct. 9, Lee had severe diarrhea and went to the doctor. He tested positive for H1N1.
Lee-Gray says her son decided to rest alone at home fearful he would pass along the swine flu. So, while on Tamiflu and antibiotics, he stayed at home for five days.
On Oct. 14, Lee was showing no signs of improvement and was gasping for air. So his mother took him back to the doctor.
"He comes out with a letter and says he's being admitted to the hospital. Because his blood pressure dropped and was going into acute kidney disease," said Lee-Gray.
"It was just going to be an overnight stay. I checked him the hospital he said he was tired and told me to go home. I never spoke to him again," said Lee-Gray.
Within two days at West Houston Hospital Lee was placed on a ventilator, put in ICU, and started dialysis.
"By the time we lost him we were fighting four different viral and bacterial problems," said Lee-Gray.
