HOUSTON -- Almost 1,800 people received free medical care provided by television physician Dr. Mehmet Oz at Houston's Reliant Center, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Anthony Delane hobbled into Reliant Center with an untreated abscess, an exposed bone on his toe and no health insurance. Delane said he was watching Local 2 when he heard about Dr. Oz' free health care clinic on Saturday.
Dr. Bobby Kapur said Delane's infection could have killed him had he not gotten help.
“Health care is a right, it's not a luxury. A lot of people here are uninsured, so it's a remote luxury, something they don't have access to every day,” Dr. Kapur said.
We also met Nancy waiting in line for help. She didn't want to give us her last name, but said she suffers from a hypothyroid condition and diabetes. Neither problem is treated consistently because Nancy can't afford health insurance.
“I'm at my wits end about it. I have some conditions that need to be addressed, and I'm very, very grateful that they're doing this,” Nancy said.
Volunteers triaged patients, who were then escorted to medical pods. Nurses checked vital signs before patients were seen by a doctor. Some were so desperate for this medical help, they arrived at Reliant before the sun was up.
“I don't have health insurance, and I've been needing to see the doctor a really long time and neglecting to see the doctor," Karen Coney said.
Dr. Oz offered a steady hand and warm smile to those waiting in line. He and the National Association of Free Clinics chose Houston because Texas has the highest rate of uninsured. In Harris County alone, one in three people do not have health insurance. Just ask Steve Cantrell, who said this started as nothing more than a small sore on the corner of his mouth.
“You go to these hospitals, you don't have insurance, they want $150. If you don't have $150, you can't do nothing. That makes you mad,” Steve Cantrell said.
Dr. Oz will feature the free clinic on his new program, The Dr. Oz Show, in October. You can watch Dr. Oz weekdays at 3 p.m. on KPRC Local 2.
