HOUSTON -- With the price of gold at an all time high, some Houstonians are raiding their jewelry boxes to turn their gold into green, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.
"I've had these pieces for years and years. (They're) just collecting dust in my jewelry box. Why not turn that into cash?" said Laura Clinard.
Clinard sat with a baggy filled with a couple of necklaces, rings and bracelets. But she was not alone. About six women gathered around a kitchen table for an afternoon gold party.
Along with tea sandwiches were anxious sellers waiting to see how much they made on the spot.
"This is worth $1,065.99," said Amy Robinette. Robinette is known as the Gold Buying Girl.
"I started this business three months ago when my job wasn't really making a lot of money," said Robinette.
The Gold Buying Girl comes to you and will inspect the jewelry, weigh it and determine the price based on karat weight. She said that she's seen a lot of different pieces being sold.
"I've had people sell me their gold teeth. That was the strangest. I've also had heirloom jewelry. And items from ex-husbands," said Robinette.
The price of gold is at an all-time high. Monday, pure gold traded at $1,017.70 an ounce, according to Blanchard.
"Could it go higher, absolutely," said Financial Consultant Richard Rosso.
Rosso also pointed out that gold typically is erratic on the market. And September typically is an up month for the metal.
"You go back in history, it's wedding season overseas, there seems to be more gold buying around the early part of the fourth quarter. Sometimes, it's just based on the demand for the metal," said Rosso.
Whatever the demand, there are plenty of women cashing in. The highest check written at this party was $1,710.
