191 Arrested In No-Refusal Weekend
35 Had Been Charged With Driving While Intoxicated In Past
Nearly 200 suspected drunken drivers were arrested during the Harris County District Attorney's Labor Day weekend no-refusal enforcement program, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.
Of the 191 arrested and charged, 35 had faced driving while intoxicated charges in the past.
The no-refusal program was the first operation using new state laws that no longer require authorities to get warrants to draw blood samples from suspected drunken drivers under certain situations, including when children are in the vehicle, when drivers have committed DWI in the past or when there are injuries that need medical attention.
"This operation was a double success," said Brent Mayr, chief of the district attorney's vehicular crimes section. "It took intoxicated drivers off the streets and it was deterring others from getting behind the wheel."
Six of the drivers charged with DWI refused to provide voluntary blood samples and were forced to submit to warrantless blood tests.
