HOUSTON -- A Fort Bend County high school student battling cancer has received encouragement from a famous cancer survivor, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.
Addison Marshall was diagnosed with aggressive form of cancer called acute lymphocytic leukemia in May. At one point, his spleen was 90 percent full of leukemia cells and the swelling cracked his ribs.
Addison, 16, would be playing varsity football at Foster High School if cancer had not sidelined him.
Athletes and students in the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District are wearing bracelets in a show of support for Addison.
The bracelets are black and yellow, the colors of Foster High School, and they read, "We R Marshall" on one side and "Crush Cancer" on the other.
Another athlete who fought with cancer and had a wristband that read "LIVESTRONG" heard about Addison's battle.
Cyclist Lance Armstrong picked up the phone and called Addison personally to offer words of encouragement.
Armstrong, a seven-time Tour de France winner, was diagnosed with testicular cancer when he was 25 years old. He's now 37.
The Sweet Tooth Shoppe in Addison's hometown of Fulshear is holding several fundraisers for mounting medical expenses. So far, $15,000 has been raised.
"It's really good to see everybody, like, helping and just being really nice," Addison said.
Addison, an "A" student and Eagle Scout, will have to tutored at home this year because his treatment leaves him at risk for infection. The treatment could last up to three years. He has a 90 percent chance of recovery.
