HOUSTON -- A woman went on a shopping spree in Austin, but she wasn't there and she didn't authorize it, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.
"It was very shocking to go to the bank and find out $2,500 was missing," said Sharon Purcell.
Sharon and her husband, Brian, live in Tomball. They recently found out someone spent their money at a Walmart in Austin using Sharon Purcell's bank account number and driver's license number.
Austin Police said the Purcells are some of the most recent victims in an identity theft fraud that is targeting Houstonians.
Debbie and Allen Louis own a company in Channelview and had a strikingly similar experience.
Debbie Louis said someone obtained access to their bank routing number and their company's bank account number. She said that information was then used to write checks to Austin Walmart stores in amounts of $2,500.
Austin police said the same man is behind these crimes. They have surveillance videos of a man in his mid-30s coming out of various Walmarts throughout Texas. He is described as very muscular and frequently wears a hat, Bluetooth headset and heavy gold jewelry.
Authorities said they are not sure how the man is obtaining people's personal information, but they believe he uses it to create fake checks and driver's licenses. He then allegedly purchases Walmart gift cards in $2,500 amounts.
One Walmart in central Texas recorded more than $30,000 in losses attributed to the man. Police said he seems to be making a loop around the state, hitting Walmart stores in San Antonio, Porter, Sealy, Marble Falls and Austin.
Authorities said they believe the man may live in Houston because that is where most of his victims live.
Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Tipsters can remain anonymous and are asked to call 713-222-TIPS with any information.
