HOUSTON -- A man who has allegedly purchased tens of thousands of dollars worth of gift cards with stolen personal information may be from Houston, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.
Austin police said a man is using using people's personal and bank information to make counterfeit checks and driver's licenses.
The man has used the counterfeit documents across Texas to purchase Walmart gift cards, usually worth $2,500 each. One store in central Texas has incurred more than $30,000 in losses because he has hit it several times.
Most of the victims are from the Houston area, prompting detectives to believe the man may live in area. More than $12,000 in counterfeit checks was passed with one victim's information.
The man was described as black, very muscular and in his mid-30s. He always wears a Bluetooth headset on his right ear and normally wears several pieces of heavy gold jewelry, including a watch, chain and bracelet. He may be driving a white minivan.
