UPDATED: 6:39 pm CDT August 28, 2009

A car hit a 51-year-old woman while she was walking along the East Freeway feeder at John Martin Road in Baytown early Friday morning.

The woman was thrown into a ditch.

Deputies said the 57-year-old woman driving the red Chevy Cobalt stopped after the accident. The Cobalt had a smashed windshield.

A tow truck driver told KPRC Local 2 he saw the car and called Harris County deputies.

“The deputy asked the woman what she hit,” Harris County Sgt. S. Wolverton said. “She thought she hit a female.”

The deputy found the victim in the ditch. Paramedics said she was unconscious, had head trauma, two broken vertebrae and two broken legs.

“The driver was impaired on drugs, prescription medication. She said she had taken an Ambien, which is a known sleeping pill,” Wolverton said.

The driver is charged with intoxication assault.
