HOUSTON -- A man has been accused of filing a false claim with the Federal Emergency Management Agency for Hurricane Ike disaster assistance, KPRC Local 2 reported.
David F. Morgan, 51, was arrested at his home on Thursday.
The indictment alleges that on or about Sept. 18, five days after Hurricane Ike made landfall, Morgan filed a claim with FEMA with a Social Security number one digit off from his own. He listed a damaged address in Galveston that did not exist, officials said.
Morgan has been charged with disaster-assistance fraud in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1340. This statute was enacted in January 2008 as part of the Emergency Disaster Assistance Fraud Penalty Enhancement Act of 2007.
If convicted, Morgan faces up to 30 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
