Son's Death Discovered 16 Days Later

Corby Bradford Shot, Killed By METRO Police

A Houston-area mother whose son was shot and killed by METRO police wants to know why it took weeks for her to find out about her son's death, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.

Corby Bradford was killed in May. His mother said she heard about it 16 days later from friends who saw it on the news.

"We had no idea. No one had contacted us or anything," Clarice Bradford said.

Investigators said the problems began on a light-rail platform on Fannin Street on May 5. A woman flagged down a METRO police officer to report an assault.

Police said they found the man on the dirt trail at Rice University and he came toward them with a knife. A METRO police officer then shot and killed Corby Bradford, 40, officials said.

Clarice Bradford said friends, watching television more than two weeks later, called her to let her know her son was dead.

"I would have liked to have seen them at least call me, contact me or something. No one contacted me. And the only way we found out about it is through that and to verify that that was my son, was I called the morgue," she said.

A spokesman for the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office said he was not aware of any identification on Bradford the day he died.

He said, in such a case, state law requires identification through forensics.

METRO police said their records show Bradford had a driver's license with an old address, which did not help the medical examiner charged with identifying the remains and notifying family.

Bradford said her son carried current emergency contact information with her number.

"I still want to know what happened and why they didn't call me," Clarice Bradford said.

The Houston Police Department is investigating the METRO police-involved shooting. Officials said that Corby Bradford was hit with a Taser three times, without any effect. A spokesman for METRO said its police officer was not found to be at fault.

A woman on the trail was also shot and wounded. She is suing METRO police.
