HOUSTON -- A jury sentenced a mother convicted of mutilating her infant by cutting off his genitals to 99 years in prison and a $10,000 fine, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.
Katherine Michelle Nadal, 28, was found guilty of causing serious bodily harm to a child. Jurors deliberated for more than three hours before reaching the verdict Friday afternoon.
Jurors began deliberations on sentencing shortly after 6:30 p.m. Monday. Later that night, they sentenced Nadal to 99 years imprisonment and attached an added $10,000 fine.
Nadal, who showed no emotion when the guilty verdict was read, faced a potential maximum punishment of life in prison.
KPRC Local 2 reporter Elizabeth Scarborough was in the courtroom when the sentence was read, and witnessed Nadal shake her head and mouth to the jury that they were wrong.
Harris County prosecutors said Nadal was high on drugs when she mutilated her then 5-week-old son, Holden Gothia, in March 2007 at their apartment on El Dorado Boulevard in Webster.
During the sentencing phase of the trial, Holden's aunt, Patches DeShazo, told jurors how the toddler remains handicapped as a result of his wounds. One of his legs is shorter than the other. She said he faces years of reconstructive surgery and psychological counseling.
DeShazo said that Holden has frequent nightmares, and she said she quit her job to raise the child.
DeShazo said that even though Nadal relinquished her parental rights, she is concerned that Nadal might try to inject herself into Holden's life.
Prosecutors and police painted Nadal as a drug addict since high school.
The defense called Nadal's mother to testify.
The mother told jurors how Nadal began a downward spiral after a childhood friend died. Nadal had twice checked into rehabilitation centers, but continued her drug use.
Nadal's defense attorney, Allen Isabell, earlier said he had hoped for a "reasonable sentence" that would not "take away the rest of (Nadal's) life."
Nadal's attorneys said their client didn't harm her son and blame the attack on the family dog: a 7-pound, black-and-tan miniature dachshund.
Prosecutors said there was no evidence that the dog ingested human tissue. Holden's severed body parts were never found.
Prosecutors called the idea of a 7-pound dog castrating a 6-pound baby ridiculous.
They said Nadal was reeling from a cocktail of dugs she had taken the night before -- mixing methadone, cocaine and Xanax. She and her husband had argued over circumcising the baby.
Three doctors testified that the boy's wound appeared to have been made with a sharp object.
Nadal did not testify in the trial.
Holden survived and is now 2 years old and is living with a paternal aunt and uncle.
Nadal and Gothia have given up their parental rights.
It is not known if Holden will receive the surgery needed to reconstruct his genitals. The procedures could cost millions of dollars and Medicaid has said it will not cover it because it is considered to be cosmetic.
