Murder-For-Hire Suspect Missing

Margaret Lorraine Smith's Husband Found Dead On Surfside Beach

UPDATED: 6:31 pm CDT August 17, 2009

A woman accused of hiring a hitman to kill her husband who was set to go on trial is nowhere to be found, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

Margaret Lorraine Smith

Margaret Lorraine Smith, 50, was arrested in 2007 after her husband, George, was found beaten to death on Surfside Beach in Brazoria County. The couple owned several pieces of property in Surfside totaling more than $1 million.

Smith was released on bond and was being tracked by an electronic ankle monitor.

Smith's bail bondsman said the sheriff's office told her on Wednesday that the monitor was no longer transmitting. The bail bondsman said Smith checked in regularly over the past two years.

"She comes off as happy-go-lucky, always in good spirits, never showed any worry about anything," bail bondsman Beatreace McFatter said.

Smith was scheduled to appear in court Monday morning to face capital murder charges. She never showed up, so a warrant was issued for her arrest, officials said.

Her attorney, Tom Stickler, said that he expected Smith to be in court.

Dylan Laughrey was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for George Smith's murder.

George Smith was killed with the metal part of a tire and was struck multiple times in the head.

If convicted, Margaret Smith faces life in prison.

The Brazoria County Sheriff's Office asks anyone with information about her whereabouts to call 979-864-2227.
