HOUSTON -- A mother accused in the death of her 4-year-old daughter was released from jail on bond Wednesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Abigail Elizabeth Young, 33, and her boyfriend, Lucas Coe, 28, have been charged with first-degree felony injury to a child. They were arrested on Monday.
On June 27, Young's daughter, Emma Thompson, 4, died at Memorial Hermann Hospital in The Woodlands. She had a fractured skull, and investigators said there were internal injuries that showed sexual abuse. The girl had previously been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease.
On Friday, Emma's death was ruled a homicide. The official cause of death was blunt force trauma.
Through her attorneys, Young claimed she had nothing to do with Emma's death. She also claimed she had no knowledge that her daughter was being sexually abused.
Young was released on $50,000 bond. Prosecutors said she will have limited contact with her two daughters, who are staying with her ex-husband's family.
"She will be able to write letters to the children and the children to her, but they're going to be looked at by CPS (Child Protective Services) and the district attorney's office," Assistant District Attorney Colleen Barnett said. "In some kind of way, possibly, the children are witnesses. I want to make sure that that is protected."
Court documents showed that Emma's father first noticed something was wrong.
"Her dad noticed she had bruises to her face and her body, which the mother explained by telling the dad that she had fallen out of the bed," Barnett said.
Evidence of abuse was also read aloud when Young and Coe appeared in court on Tuesday.
"The autopsy revealed that Emma had 80 contusions, a severe head laceration, hemorrhaging of the scalp, a skull fracture, internal bleeding," Barnett said.
Probable cause documents indicate Emma also had vaginal tearing and oral and vaginal herpes.
If found guilty, Young and Coe could face life in prison.
Vigil Planned For Thursday
On Thursday, the Spring community and close friends will hold a candlelight vigil to celebrate Emma's life.
Organizers said, "The community welcomes everyone who wishes to attend not only for Emma, but for all children who are abused every day and who tragically die every day. Help us remember this beautiful child and try to bring a strong awareness to Emma's story. We hope Emma's story will one day save the lives of others and finally bring peace to her family and friends."
The vigil will be held on Thursday from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. at The Church at Creek's End, 20010 Kuykendahl, in Spring.
