HOUSTON -- A mother and her boyfriend appeared in court on Tuesday after they were charged in connection with a 4-year-old girl's death, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Abigail Elizabeth Young, 33, and Lucas Coe, 28, were apprehended on Monday. They were charged with first-degree felony injury to a child.
On June 27, Young's daughter, Emma Thompson, 4, died at Memorial Hermann Hospital in The Woodlands. She had a fractured skull, and investigators said there were internal injuries that showed sexual abuse. The girl had previously been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease.
On Friday, Emma's death was ruled a homicide. The official cause of death was blunt force trauma.
Court documents showed that Emma's father first noticed something was wrong.
"Her dad noticed she had bruises to her face and her body, which the mother explained by telling the dad that she had fallen out of the bed," assistant district attorney Colleen Barnett said.
Emma's pediatrician discovered more alleged abuse.
"Dr. Sing, who was (Emma's) pediatrician saw (Emma) and saw that she had oral and vaginal herpes and bruising that defendant Young's explanation was not consistent with the injuries," Barnett said.
Evidence of abuse was also read aloud in court on Tuesday.
"The autopsy revealed that Emma had 80 contusions, a severe head laceration, hemorrhaging of the scalp, a skull fracture, internal bleeding," Barnett said.
Young appeared in court in her nurse's scrubs. She was arrested at work at Trinity Hospital in Brenham.
Coe was taken into custody near Magnolia after a short foot chase.
If found guilty, Young and Coe could face life in prison.
Young and Coe are being held on $50,000 bond each.
Vigil Planned For Thursday
On Thursday, the Spring community and close friends will hold a candlelight vigil to celebrate Emma's life.
Organizers said, "The community welcomes everyone who wishes to attend not only for Emma, but for all children who are abused every day and who tragically die every day. Help us remember this beautiful child and try to bring a strong awareness to Emma's story. We hope Emma's story will one day save the lives of others and finally bring peace to her family and friends."
The vigil will be held on Thursday from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. at The Church at Creek's End, 20010 Kuykendahl, in Spring.
