Protect Plants From Freeze

Simple Steps Go A Long Way

Plants require special care when the weather turns cold.

AJ's Landscaping and Design said the following steps should be taken.

  • Water plants. Dry plants are more susceptible to cold damage than plants that have been watered since water works as an insulator for the plant. Water also protects the root system.
  • Cover tender plants and vegetation such as annuals. They have a watery stem and if it gets cold enough, that stem is going to freeze, killing the plant.
  • Plants should be covered with a breathable material, like a blanket, sheet or frost cloth sold at nurseries. Do not use plastic to cover plants since it does not allow the plant to breathe.
