Thieves Target Homes For Jewelry

Detectives believe a group of thieves has been breaking into homes and stealing thousands of dollars worth of jewelry. They said your home could be next, unless these criminals are caught, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.

"These were the earrings my husband gave me for my birthday," said a woman who did not want to be identified, but wanted her story to be told.

Now all this woman has, are empty jewelry boxes. She showed KPRC Local 2 several.

"This was my Mother's Day gift," she said.

She said thieves stole more than 30 pieces from her home.

"They're just possessions, but at the same time, they had meaning to me and not to anyone else," she said.

Fort Bend County sheriff's deputies showed KPRC Local 2 photos of what the woman's bedroom looked like right after the burglary. It was ransacked.

"The kids wanted to grab a snack down the street. We were only gone for about an hour," she said. "This was my home. I thought we were safe. Now, I'm questioning how safe we really are."

Deputies now have extra patrols out, both undercover and marked units. They've been called to six jewelery thefts in the New Territory area in recent weeks, and they believe all the burglaries are done by one group of criminals.

"They know which area to enter to keep from setting off the alarm," Detective Jason Bell said. "They know something about jewelery, because they leave the costume stuff behind."

He said there's a pattern. Each time, the thieves break windows in the master bedroom or bathroom, and stick to those two specific rooms. In a few minutes, they're able to get between $10,000 and $20,000 worth of jewels. Each crime was committed in broad daylight

"It looks like suspects following and watching the victims before burglaries," said Bell.

The woman KPRC Local 2 spoke with said her wedding ring is even more precious now.

"It's the only thing I have left," she said. "It was the only piece of jewelry I had on."

Anyone with information about the burglaries is asked to call Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at 281-342-TIPS.
