No parking signs cause stir in Rice Military neighborhood

HOUSTON – Last week a string of no parking signs popped up on Gibson Street just west of Durham Drive in the Rice Military area.

People here have seen the no parking signs on the roads just off of the popular Washington strip, but not deeper in the neighborhood.

Resident Elise Reynolds had a sign that went up in front of her home.

"Really ugly and poorly placed," she said. "What were they hoping to accomplish with these signs and can we change it? Can we fix it because it's going to cause problems for the homeowners."

A spokesman from the city of Houston's public works department said the signs are part of a one-year traffic study that he says was requested by residents. The spokesman said it was because of the narrow streets and the fear that emergency vehicles could not get through.

Some here say they understand the concern.

"I think that the signs have done some good things by limiting the amount of bar and restaurant parking in the neighborhood," resident Cameron Armstrong said. "On the other hand, the streets are just really narrow to begin with. It might be better to have one way streets instead of really skinny streets that you can't park on."

Reynolds wondered if there might be a better place to put the signs. For now she's not sure of where visitors could park.

"I think a couple of blocks over there might some spots," she said. "I guess I could send them there. I don't expect that I'll be able to have company anytime soon."
