Two Pasadena Independent School District employees have been fired after a student was left alone on a school bus.
District officials said the 7-year-old student was left on the bus Wednesday afternoon after returning to the district’s transportation department.
Pasadena ISD said the driver and the monitor failed to inspect the bus before leaving for the night.
“This driver and monitor did not follow through on their critical responsibility,” the district wrote in a statement. “As a result of this incident, the driver and monitor have been terminated."
Transportation officials said the child was found sleeping on the bus after the family called to report that the child never made it home after school.
“We regret that this happened,” the statement read. “Transporting 17,000 students each day to and from school requires careful planning and coordination keeping student safety at the forefront. This incident was an exception not at all typical of our staff. We will continue to train employees and are confident they will enforce procedures to keep students safe.”
The district said the student was found unharmed and was safely returned home.
