GALVESTON BAY, Texas – Two boaters were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard Wednesday after their boat flipped over near an island in Galveston Bay, 5 miles off Kemah.

Coast Guard officials said the boaters made a mayday call at 9:43 a.m., but watchstanders were unable to communicate with the men on the radio.

Based on directions from radio transmissions from the men, a helicopter crew and boat crew were sent out to search for them.

The Coast Guard said a construction tender, the Coast Guard cutter Clamp, spotted the overturned boat about 11:40 a.m. A boat crew and helicopter aircrew were then sent to the location and rescued David Fuhrman and Nick Hunter.

The Coast Guard said one of the men was taken by boat and the other was flown by medevac helicopter with a possible broken leg.

Hunter said he is enlisting in the Coast Guard and is set to ship off to boot camp in September.
