Passengers flee during traffic stop

HOUSTON -

Two passengers bailed out of a car during a traffic stop in northeast Houston Friday and only one has been caught.

Around 4 a.m., a Houston police officer pulled over a Chevy Impala for a routine traffic stop on North Sam Houston Parkway East and Mesa Drive.

Investigators said that as the driver stopped, the front seat passenger jumped out of the car and fled on foot.

The officer then chased the fleeing suspect and as that happened, the back seat passenger also jumped out and ran in the other direction, police said.

Investigators and K-9 units searched for the two passengers in a wooded area behind a CVS pharmacy near where the car was pulled over.

"We just went ahead and set up a pretty big parameter. It's a pretty big wooded area here. We had two canine dogs out here that searched the woods, but weren't able to locate them," said R.G. Flores, with the Houston Police Department.

The driver of the Impala stayed inside the car and investigators said he was being cooperative.

Officials said they knew who the two passengers are, but were not sure why they fled.

The driver was not charged, officials said.
