HOUSTON - A massive fire tore through a home near the Third Ward Thursday night, but two residents were able to escape unharmed.
The Houston Fire Department said firefighters responded at around 8:15 p.m. to find heavy flames coming from a home near Highway 288 and Rosedale.
Firefighters said they went defensive and called for more units to battle the one-alarm fire.
"Just the amount of fire that was showing, the amount of house that was involved, we just didn't feel it was safe to send the crews in at that time," said HFD District Chief Tony Bisbano.
About 50 firefighters were called out to the scene.
Brisbano said a woman and her teenage son were in the house when they either smelled smoke or saw flames. The two were able to get out of the home and call 911.
The woman and her son were not injured. The house sustained significant damage.
Arson investigators are looking into what caused the fire to start, but Bisbano said that is routine considering the size of the fire.
