HOUSTON -- An investigation is under way after a man who was detained by a police officer died, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.
Stafford police said someone called 911 to report that a Houston police officer detained a person in the parking lot of Studio 59 at 11110 West Airport Blvd. at about 2 a.m. Saturday.
The caller requested an officer go to the scene. Police have not said who made that call.
Stafford police officers said they went to the parking lot and saw Syulvanus Okhueleigbe, 30, lying on the ground in the parking lot. He was unconscious, police said.
Emergency medical services arrived at the scene and gave Okhueleigbe first aid. He was taken to Southwest Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators have not released any information regarding what caused Okhueleigbe's death, which will be determined by the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office.
"(Okhueleigbe) was a resident of Missouri City. He was a Nigerian immigrant and had only been here about four months," Stafford police said.
Gary Blankinship of the Houston Police Officers Union said the off-duty officer, T.L. Harris, was walking a female bartender out to her car because Okhueleigbe had told the woman "I'll see you when you get off."
The officer walked the woman to her car and she drove off.
Blankinship said Okhueleigbe came at Harris and the officer tried to put him in custody, but Okhueleigbe kept resisting. At that point, the manager of the bar came out to help, and as they were both trying to subdue Okhueleigbe in a headlock position, he went limp.
Blankinship said Harris is very shaken by the incident.
Harris is a 14-year veteran officer assigned to the Westside substation. He was relieved of duty with pay pending further investigation.
Information gathered during the investigation will be reviewed by the Fort Bend County District Attorney's Office to determine if any charges will be filed.
HPD Statement"The HPD Internal Affairs Division is conducting a parallel investigation into an incident involving off-duty Officer T.L. Harris in Stafford, Texas.
