HOUSTON -- A water main break caused problems on one Houston freeway and left some residents without water, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Every morning, Tom Corvin waters his lawn and plants, but he couldn't on Monday. He woke up to no water because of a water main break to a 12-inch line in the area.
Corvin said he isn't worried just yet.
"I've got filtered water, so I got water to drink," he sad, "It's not a problem yet because we're not up and about."
Corvin is just one of dozens of residents and businesses in the immediate area of the North Freeway and Main Street without any water. The city shut it off because the break caused hundreds of gallons of water to pour out from the wall onto the freeway.
It caused major traffic backups and several accidents. Early-morning commuters were unaware of the high water on the freeway. Some hit the water, spun out and ended up crashing into a concrete wall.
"So far our leak-detection team has not pinpointed where the leak is coming from," said Roberto Medina of City of Houston Public Works Department
By mid-morning, workers began using a huge vacuum to get all the water off the freeway. They said they hope to reopen the two lanes closed by early afternoon.
"They break because of heat. No moisture causes ground to shift and that causes breakage," said Medina.
Anyone with questions about this water main break, or anyone who wants to report one in another area within Houston's city limits, was asked to call 3-1-1.
