HOUSTON -- Friday may be a holiday for most, but it was no day off for many deputies from the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable's Office and the Houston Police Department. They were busy chasing after a 16-year-old who was allegedly driving a vehicle that was reported stolen, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Investigators said the teen took them on an 18-mile chase through southwest Houston, at times reaching speeds of up to 80 mph.
"He ran red lights. He ran the wrong way on many roads and through many parking lots, most notably the Sharpstown Mall parking lot," said Sgt. J.A. Welborn of the Houston Police Department.
The chase started after a deputy constable ran the license plate of the green Ford Thunderbird and it came back stolen.
Detectives said the 16-year-old refused to pull over, so HPD was asked to assist. Officers thought they had the suspect cornered near Sharpstown Mall, but he got away.
"Because he was slowing down and they thought he was going to get out of the car, in the course trying to set up a perimeter two HPD officers crashed and one spun out and hit a brick wall," said Welborn.
The Thunderbird's back tire blew out and the teen was driving on a rim. The chase ended at the Braeburn Villa Apartments in the 9600 block of Braes Bayou Drive, where the teen crashed into two cars.
Investigators said they believe the teen lives at the apartment complex.
