A driver in a reportedly stolen van led police on a 40-minute chase through several parts of Houston Thursday afternoon, causing numerous wrecks, KPRC Local 2 reported.

The chase started shortly after 4 p.m. when a 911 caller said he was in pursuit of a stolen vehicle near the 1900 block of East T.C. Jester Boulevard.

Houston police officers began following the driver, who would not stop.

From The Heights, the chase moved to the Katy Freeway, where traffic slowed the driver down and he evaded police by driving on the shoulder and grassy areas, police said.

The chase continued through the River Oaks area and on the Southwest Freeway.

On Highway 59, the driver hit the guardrail and clipped a couple of vehicles as he tried to pass them in occupied lanes, according to officials.

Police tried to stop the driver with spike strips, but the driver was able to avoid them.

The driver exited on Gessner Road, where he encountered traffic and rammed into the back of a BMW, officers said.

Police surrounded the van on the feeder road, dragged the driver out and arrested him at about 4:45 p.m.

A woman and her daughter were inside the BMW. The daughter was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The chase suspect was checked out by paramedics and then released to officers.

A witness said the man stole a van that was carrying $9,000 worth of construction equipment.

"(The driver) didn't know until he came outside. He went inside for a drink of water and when he came back outside, his van was gone. It happened within a few seconds. The guy was just passing by and decided to take the van," said Albert Villegas.

Traffic in the area of Highway 59 at Gessner Road was backed up for miles.
