Suspected Burglar Shot At Apartment

Police: Wounded Suspect Claims To Be Victim

POSTED: Wednesday, July 1, 2009
UPDATED: 6:28 pm CDT July 1, 2009

A Sugar Land apartment resident shot a suspected burglar, who later turned up in southwest Houston claiming to be a victim, officials told KPRC Local 2 Wednesday.

Police said James Arther, 33, was sleeping in his apartment in the 2300 block of Long Reach Drive shortly after noon when a burglar broke a side window.

He told investigators that he picked up his 9mm pistol, walked to the door, and was rushed by a man.

Police said Arther shot the intruder in the upper body. When Arther went to call 911, the man fled in a silver SUV, according to witnesses.

About 30 minutes later, a man bleeding from the upper chest showed up in front of the Texas Eye Institute, 7710 Beechnut, about 10 miles away, police said.

Investigators said he claimed that he was shot by a man who tried to rob him. He was taken to an area hospital by ambulance.

A silver SUV with blood stains on the front seat was found about a block away and a blood trail led to the Texas Eye Institute.

The burglary suspect has not yet been charged. His name and condition have not been released.

Sugar Land and Houston police are investigating.
