Student Shot Near TSU

TSU: High School Students Tried To Rob TSU Student

POSTED: Tuesday, June 30, 2009
UPDATED: 6:10 pm CDT June 30, 2009

A high school student was critically wounded in a shooting across from Texas Southern University in southeast Houston, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.

Police said the shooting happened at a METRO bus stop in the 3400 block of Cleburne shortly before 11:30 a.m.

Houston police said a TSU student was sitting at the bus stop when he was approached by three high school students, who attempted to rob him. One of the robbery suspects flashed a gun in his waistband, and demanded the TSU student's cash and cell phone, officials said.

Police said there was a struggle and a 17-year-old suspected robber was shot.

"During the struggle, (the TSU student) was able to get the gun from one of the suspects and during the struggle, another suspect involved in the robbery -- the gun goes off and one of the other suspects gets shot in the neck," said Sgt. Will Gonzales with HPD Homicide.

The student who was shot was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition. His name was not released. Officials said he attended Yates High School.

Police said they also found marijuana at the scene, which they believe belonged to the TSU student.

There's no word yet on if he will be cited in connection with the drugs.
