HOUSTON -- Houston police officers served a search warrant Saturday at the home of a man who killed a Houston police officer, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Houston police said 37-year-old Robert Carrillo killed Senior Officer Henry Canales during a stolen goods transaction in southwest Houston on Wednesday night. Carrillo and three others bought $35,000 worth of stolen TVs and laptops for $6,500 before Carrillo tried to rob Canales, investigators said.
A second police officer killed Carrillo at the scene.
Investigators said they found many more stolen items when they searched Carrillo's home on Estes Park Lane near Veterans Memorial Drive in northwest Houston.
"We've got compressors, generators," Officer Oscar Gamez said. "Some of the generators that we have here still have a price tag from whatever store they came from and even the security tags on them."
Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of items were found in the back yard. Most of the serial numbers had been scratched off.
Neighbors said there was a lot of activity at the home, but they had no idea exactly what was going on there.
"I could not believe what happened," neighbor Vilita Cheng said. "Especially (because) we live so close to each other. I didn't expect this."
"A lot of activity, a lot of parties … constant parties," neighbor Carla Aponte said. "Garage sales and a lot of dealership cars."
It is not clear how long Carrillo lived at the home, but police said that it was clear that the operation he was running was big.
"It's not something he just started a week ago," Gamez said. "It's not something you got lucky and got a good deal and a good offer. They've been doing this for a while."
Investigators said they have conducted two other search warrants in connection with the case. Detectives said they found stolen property at Xiomara Mendez-Rosales' home.
Mendez-Rosales and Andres Nava-Maldonado have been charged with capital murder in Canales' death. A 16-year-old is also being held in connection with the killing.
Police said all four suspects were in the United States illegally.
Funeral Service Finalized
Canales' funeral service will be held on Monday at 9:30 a.m. at Grace Community Church, 14505 Gulf Freeway. A private burial service will follow.
A public visitation will be held at the church from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sunday.
