HOUSTON -- About 100 people gathered for a meeting to discuss crime on Houston's east side, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.
"Our intent is to exchange information and make the community a safer place," Harris County Precinct 6 Constable Victor Trevino said.
Many people had questions for Trevino and Houston police, but everyone kept coming back to a convenience store shooting that happened Wednesday on Harrisburg Boulevard near Milby Street.
Muhammed "Mike" Zubair, 55, owned the Best Stop Food Market. He was shot to death after the store was robbed, police said. The manager, Siraj Quraishi, was also killed.
"This is a very tough time for my family and I don't want anyone else to go through the same suffering we're going through today," said the owner's daughter, Faiza Zubair.
"We all take it personally when something like this happens," Houston police Asst. Chief Dorothy Edwards said.
Trevino said his deputies are communicating better with HPD and stopping at businesses more frequently since the double slaying.
"The presence of police is a deterrent," said Trevino. "That particular day, we weren't there."
The owner's daughter said at least law enforcement is trying to work with them to prevent future tragedies, like her father's death, from happening.
"There's no right answer," said Zubair. "My father is gone now."
Police said violent crime in that area is actually down 26 percent when compared to last year. They said they are working as hard as they can to find the killer in that double killing before he hurts anyone else.
