Houston police are trying to find the person or persons who killed a 19-year-old man and critically injured his 17-year-old wife at a north Houston park, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

The shooting happened at McCullough Park in the 900 block of East 40th Street at about 2 a.m.

Family members of James Smith Jr. and his wife, Yiasha Smith, said the couple walked to the park after putting their 3-year-old to bed.

Detective Brian Evans said James Smith's younger brother discovered the couple was shot.

"The younger brother arrived and discovered his brother's body shot multiple times," Evans said. "His wife was also here, shot multiple times and taken to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition."

Several family members and friends were at the scene as police collected evidence. James Smith's mother was in disbelief when she heard her son was killed.

"My son and another boy came and got me and said they thought my other son was dead," Renae Arterberry said. "His wife was still awake. All she said (was) she couldn't feel her legs."

Homicide detectives said they do not believe robbery to be a motive since nothing was taken from the couple.

Anyone with information is asked to call the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
