POSTED: Monday, June 1, 2009
UPDATED: 12:23 pm CDT June 1, 2009

A 14-year-old has been charged with murder after he crashed a stolen car, police told KPRC Local 2.

Houston police said a man left a Chevrolet Impala running in front of a store in the 1000 block of Quitman Street on Sunday.

The man told investigators that it was stolen and he saw three males inside the vehicle as it was driven away.

Police said a 14-year-old behind the wheel was driving at a high rate of speed and lost control as he went over railroad tracks in the 600 block of North York Street at about 11:40 p.m.

The car hit a tree, rolled, hit a water main and then hit another tree, investigators said.

A 15-year-old back seat passenger was killed, officials said. His name was not released.

Detectives said the 14-year-old and a front seat passenger ran after the crash. A Harris County Precinct 6 deputy constable spotted them and took them into custody.

The 14-year-old and surviving passenger were treated for minor injuries.
