2-Alarm Fire Engulfs Apartments

Witnesses: Fire Seen Shooting From Roof Of Building

UPDATED: 12:07 pm CDT May 25, 2009

A two-alarm fire engulfed part of a southwest Houston apartment complex Monday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Fire officials said the blaze began at about 7:15 a.m. at the Meadow Southwest Apartments at 10440 South Dr. at Brooklet Street. A second alarm was called a short time later for manpower and to keep the fire contained to one building.

Most of the residents were asleep when the blaze broke out.

"Somebody came and knocked on the door and said, 'Fire.' And we walked out and I immediately heard the fire alarm and so I immediately got my family out," resident Ronnie Gray said.

"Everybody just started running and knocking on each other's doors to make sure everybody got out alright," resident Daisy Flores said.

Witnesses told KPRC Local 2 that flames were seen shooting out of the roof of one of the buildings.

"I was sleeping and somebody woke me up. When I came outside, it was like flames on top of the apartment that was one fire, people outside knocking on doors, trying to get everybody out," resident Jasmine Tudor said.

Authorities said at least four units in one section of a building were damaged or destroyed.

Investigators said the fire started in a third floor apartment, but firewalls kept the blaze contained.

"They did help contain it and we were able to keep the fire to a two-alarm in this one building. It did not spread anywhere," HFD District Chief E. Bender said.

Bender said the fire was difficult to fight because of the third-floor location.

There were no reports of any injuries.

The cause is under investigation.
