A husband and wife were arrested in connection with a shooting that injured two children and two adults near their home, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Liberty County sheriff's deputies said the shooting happened in the 2400 block of Beaumont Avenue in the Westlake subdivision near Dayton, Texas, at about 9 p.m. Thursday.

The group of four was in a sport utility vehicle, investigators said.

Deputies said Sheila Muhs called 911 to report that she had shot some people. She claimed that the people were on a four-wheeler and damaging a dyke that protects the area from the Trinity River.

Bullets shattered all of the SUV's windows, officials said.

A 7-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to the head, and his 5-year-old sister suffered a gunshot wound to the elbow. They, along with a 30-year-old man who was wounded, were taken by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

The man and the boy were in critical condition. The girl was in good condition.

A second man drove himself to the hospital, officials said. He suffered shrapnel wounds.

Sheila and Gale Muhs were charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The charges could be upgraded if any of the victims die.

"There's nothing that would justify what transpired last night," Chief Deputy Ken DeFoor said. "Apparently there was only one gun, but perhaps both of them used the gun to shoot. It's under investigation."

Investigators could not confirm if the victims drove on the dyke. They said they have received conflicting stories.

An 11-year-old in the SUV, who was not injured, said they were not driving off-road, but stopped on the side of the road to relieve themselves.

DeFoor said the shooting did not happen on private property.

"Something this severe over something, apparently at this point, very minor, it's ludicrous to think someone would take such drastic actions for something so minor," he said.

Neighbors said gunfire is common on the Muhs' street.

"Every night between midnight to 4:30 a.m., there are at least 13 to 14 shots," neighbor Joann Wainscott said.

Investigators said the shooting is under investigation, but it did not appear to be justified.
