5 Children Believed Killed In Crash

4 Bodies Recovered After Car Plunges Into Bayou; Searchers Seek Missing Girl

UPDATED: 2:07 pm CDT April 19,2009

Investigators believe five children were killed after the car they were riding in plunged into a northeast Houston bayou, KPRC Local 2 reported. Police suspect the driver, the father of four of the children, was intoxicated.

Houston firefighters said eight people were in a Lincoln Continental when it crashed into a water system along Greens Bayou near Aldine Westfield that feeds Greens Bayou on Saturday afternoon.

Investigators said two adults and six children were inside the car when it crashed. The two adults and a 10-year-old girl escaped from the car.

Crews said they initially found the car about 100 feet from where it went into the water. The doors were closed when the car was initially found by crews.

Early Sunday morning, crews pulled the car from the water and they found the bodies of three boys inside. They did not initially find the bodies of two girls, believed to be 1 and 3 years old, inside the car. Searchers later Sunday found the body of what they believe is one of the girls. Texas Equusearch volunteers were searching for the remaining missing child Sunday.

Investigators suspect the two girls may have been swept away by the water.

Houston police said the driver, Chanton Jenkins, 32, who is the father of four of the children, lost control. He faces three charges of intoxicated manslaughter, Houston police said.

"He exhibited signs of intoxication at the scene in field sobriety tests," HPD spokesman John Cannon said.

Cannon said Jenkins was given a mandatory blood test.

The identities of the children, ages 1, 3, 4, 6 and 7, have not been released.

Officials said it was raining at the time of the crash, but there was not much water on the road. Storms with heavy rain and strong winds have pounded the Houston area for two days.

Cannon said it is possible that the crash happened because of a distraction.

"When he answered the phone, the brother passenger said before he knew it they had lost control of the vehicle, were headed down an embankment and were in the water," Cannon said.

Police and fire crews were at the accident scene all night.
