Man Dies In House Fire

POSTED: Tuesday, April 14, 2009
UPDATED: 12:38 pm CDT April 14, 2009

A man died when his Huffman home caught fire early Tuesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Houston Fire Department officials said the fire broke out at the home on Huffman Cleveland Road near Plantation Hills Drive shortly before 3 a.m.

"My sister-in-law was screaming that the house is on fire," said Janice Cooper. "We were just awakened from asleep. We looked out our bedroom window and saw the house in flames already."

Cooper's husband tried to save his elderly parents, who were trapped inside.

"He got his mother out and he attempted to get his father out," District Chief Tommy Dowdy said. "He was unable to get to a door because of some things piled in front of a door."

The father, Jack Cooper, died. He used a wheelchair and had not left the home for several months.

The son and mother were taken to a hospital for treatment for burns and smoke inhalation. Their conditions were not released.

"It appears that there were a lot of things piled in the house, some papers, maybe some things stored, which always adds fuel to the fire," Dowdy said. "There's not a lot left of the house."

Officials are working to determine if the home had working smoke detectors. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
