HOUSTON -- A body found in a ditch in southeast Houston is believed to be a missing person from Fort Bend County, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.
Houston police said the body was found wrapped in a tarp in the 5000 block of Fuqua Street late Wednesday.
Spencer Wallace Vogt, 19, of Katy, was reported missing on Saturday.
Vogt's vehicle was found in Georgia. Investigators said a man Vogt may have met online was behind the wheel. That man is now a person of interest in Vogt's disappearance, officials said.
"About 11:30 last night, a body was discovered in Houston off Cullen Boulevard and Fuqua. The body was discovered as a result of an interview with the individual found driving the missing person's vehicle. The clothing description, tattoos and body piercings that the victim was known to have match, so we're fairly confident that that is going to be his body," said Chief Kevin Brady of the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators said they are awaiting autopsy results to confirm the identity.
But Vogt's family members said they have already been contacted by the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office.
"His mom e-mailed (Spencer's brother), saying that Spencer was kidnapped and they did confirm that it was his body," said Jastin Chalk, Spencer's friend.
The spokeswoman for the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office said the medical examiner will have to use fingerprints and dental records to officially identify the body.
Investigators said Vogt may have met a man online and then met him in person in Houston.
"He was in a lot of chat rooms, Web sites and stuff like that. I didn't think he would go as far as meeting someone," Chalk said.
Friends said Vogt was in a relationship, but it was described as "rocky."
Detectives have not released any information about how the person died.
Vogt attended Cinco Ranch High School.
Friends said Vogt is missed.
"He was fun-loving. He cared about everyone," Chalk said. "He never hurt anyone, never did anything bad to anyone. I just never thought this would happen."
The person of interest has not yet been charged in the case.
Anyone with information is asked to call Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at 281-342-TIPS.
