President George H.W. Bush released from hospital

HOUSTON – Former President George H.W. Bush is resting comfortably at home Tuesday after a week in the hospital.

He was released Tuesday morning after being admitted a week ago for shortness of breath.

His office released the following statement:

"President Bush was released from the Houston Methodist Hospital today. He is now resting at home, grateful to the doctors and nurses for their superb care."

Bush left the hospital out of sight from the general public.

UT Health doctor John Higgins has not treated the former President, but he gathers from his age and health history that one week in the hospital could have been to make sure he was on the right track to better health.

"They probably detected some early signs of an impending problem," he said. "They wanted to get him in there to be on the safe side, make some adjustments on the medication, do some preventative work so that what happened next would be less of a problem than it would have been."

Bush suffers from a form of Parkinson's. Higgins said two-thirds of Parkinson's patients have respiratory issues, which makes managing medications critical.

"Too much medication can affect the muscles ability to function in the lungs and too little medication can affect it," Higgins said.
