HOUSTON -- Houston Fire Department arson investigators and Houston police homicide detectives are investigating a Sunday morning house fire that killed a 5-year-old girl and injured two adults.
The fire's cause is still under investigation. A person of interest in the fire is in custody, according to the fire department. An autopsy of the child is planned.
The fire started at about 9:30 a.m. at 14515 Red Tailed Hawk Lane at White Ibis Drive in far northeast Houston near Lake Houston. It gutted most of the house.
The unidentified child was taken by medical helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, where she died.
A woman who was in the house was seriously injured and was taken to the hospital. A neighbor who tried to get into the house had non-life-threatening injuries.
Firefighters found heavy smoke and fire when they first arrived. It took them about a half hour to bring the blaze under control, according to the fire department.
