HOUSTON -- This week's show takes a look at a disturbing trend in murders between black and white youths in Houston. A study shows that the number of young black men involved in deadly shootings has risen dramatically. In says homicides are down 10 percent for whites and up 139 percent for blacks. Pretty sobering statistics, but what do they really mean?
Kim assembled a panel of experts to lay out the problem and examine some of the key issues behind the increased violence in the African-American community. The panel of experts also talked about next steps and previewed an upcoming summit designed to address these issues. The "Stop the Killing Summit" will be held on Feb. 26, 2009, at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
Quanell X, Pastor CL Jackson and the Houston Crime Coalition will host 200 to 400 students from area middle and high schools. There will be breakout sessions, lectures and every attendee will leave with an instruction manual.
The panel of experts include Minister Robert Muhammad, Founder and CEO of A.C.T.I.O.N. CDC and the southwest regional representative of the Nation of Islam; Dr. Byron Price, Associate of Political Science at Texas Southern University and Interim Director of the Barbara Jordan Institute; Rev. Leslie Smith, CEO of F.U.U.S.A.; D.Z.Cofield, Senior Pastor of Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church and First Vice President of the NAACP Houston; Dena Gray, Executive Director of the Bread of Life; Charles Savage, Executive Director of Fifth Ward Enrichment Program; and Quanell X of the New Black Panther Nation.
