LA PORTE, Texas -- Some unwanted visitors have stopped by an elementary school in east Harris County – bats, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.
In the last two weeks, up to three bats were found outside La Porte Elementary School.
The district said the first couple of bats didn't test positive, but the one bat found a couple days ago did test positive. It was discovered outside the southeast part of the building in an area that is limited to student activity.
La Porte Animal Control removed the bat, and it was sent to Harris County for further testing.
Letters were sent home to parents of students at La Porte Elementary. Parents of La Porte Junior High students were also alerted because the school is down the road from the elementary school.
Rabies Facts: Rabies is a deadly viral disease that affects the central nervous system. Any warm-blooded animal can spread it. The five wild animals in Texas at high risk of spreading rabies are bats, skunks, raccoons, foxes and coyotes. People should avoid direct contact with any wild animals. Children should be taught to never handle any animals they're not familiar with. All wounds inflicted by an animal should be washed thoroughly with soap and water for at least five minutes and medical attention should be sought immediately. All pets should be vaccinated against rabies.
