HOUSTON -- The
University of Houston is cheering on a campus-wide effort to step up recycling, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday.
The school held a pep rally to get the word out.
When you think of UH, you usually think of the school colors -- red and white. But the Cougars want to show their school spirit by going green.
The Coogs kicked off Recycle Mania, competing against 474 colleges and universities across America to see who can recycle and reduce campus waste the most.
"The environment is a public health crisis and where better to find the solutions than an institute of higher education," said Emily Messa, an assistant vice president for university services.
The students want to make sure their campus is a model for generations to come.
"I think recycling is important because we have to teach the younger community to keep recycling. That way, we'll be able to have a good planet in the future and we can all take care of each other," said Jennifer Irons, a senior.
Students are getting the word out with Recycle Mania pep rallies and campus activities. But, for many students, the concept of going green is nothing new.
"I recycle every day. Every time I drink a Coke, I walk by and drop it in. It's as easy as throwing it in the trash," said Andrew Henkel, a sophomore.
More than 240 recycling bins will be located around the UH campus, collecting bottles and cans as well as raising awareness.
