UPDATED: 7:59 am CST January 2, 2009

A couple escaped from their burning northeast Houston apartment on Thursday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Houston firefighters said the fire broke out at the Falls of Birchbrook Apartments in the 12300 block of Fleming Drive at about 5:15 p.m.

A woman woke up her sleeping husband and they escaped.

The flames were contained to the couple's apartment, but some surrounding apartments sustained smoke and water damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
