HOUSTON -- The Houston Fire Department reminded residents Tuesday to be careful with their old Christmas trees and that fireworks are illegal in the city, KPRC Local 2 reported.
Officials said it only takes about three minutes for a Christmas tree to go up in flames and light a house on fire.
"It's like a match," Capt. Beda Kent said. "It's like setting a matchbook on fire because it's that combustible."
Firefighters recommended that Christmas trees be taken to a recycling center.
With New Year's Eve around the corner, firefighters also reminded Houstonians that fireworks are dangerous and illegal in the city.
"The fines for the illegal fireworks are from $500 up to $2,000 per violation," Chief Gabe Cortez said.
HFD will have a special task force out looking for fireworks violations.
