Sheriff-Elect Promises To Expand Diversity Training

POSTED: Monday, December 15, 2008

Harris County Sheriff-elect Adrian Garcia promised a religious group Sunday that he would expand deputies' diversity training to include instruction on the Sikh faith, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Garcia listened to the concerns of members of the Sikh Center in northwest Harris County after a family reported being harassed for their religion during a burglary investigation at their home on Nov. 26.

The family said they want the deputies fired, an apology and more diversity training.

"So that way when a deputy walks in to someone else's house the next time, they would be familiar and not do what they did to us that night," Ramandeep Singh said.

The family said the deputies who responded to their 911 call for help humiliated them by handcuffing four members of their family and detaining them several hours.

"When these types of circumstances occur, we all lose," Garcia said. "The image of what should be American authority suffers."

Garcia said he could not talk about specifics of the case until after he takes office in January. Officials have said deputies could face punishment ranging from disciplinary action to termination.
