12 Students Injured In School Bus Wreck

UPDATED: 12:28 pm CST December 3, 2008

A dozen students complained of injuries after their bus was involved in a wreck on its way to school Wednesday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Harris County sheriff's deputies said the Aldine Independent School District bus was involved in a minor collision with two vehicles on Gears Road near Trickey Road at about 8 a.m.

Aldine ISD's superintendent said the bus was hit from the side and from behind.

"I thought the bus was moving and I didn't see the bus, so when I was braking it was too late and I hit the bus," said Socorro Roman, whose vehicle hit the bus from behind.

Detectives said the driver whose vehicle hit the side of the bus did not stop at a stop sign after coming out of a subdivision.

"When traffic's heavy you need to go a little slower," Deputy Jim Norris said. "Use a lot more caution."

Twenty-seven students were on board the bus. Twelve complained of injuries. Five students were taken to Northwest Memorial Hospital and seven others were taken to Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital for treatment. They did not have visible bruising or bleeding.

The bus was en route to Plummer Middle School. The driver has been with the school district for several years.

The driver whose vehicle hit the side of the bus was cited for failure to yield the right of way. Roman was cited for failure to control speed.

The intersection was closed to traffic for about an hour.
